My husband, myself and both of our daughters are all scuba divers.

I have to admit, my daughters and I prefer the pristine waters of the Caribbean, and stay closer to the surface, but my husband was always more of an adrenaline junky and loved diving in the murky waters of the Puget Sound and even at night! No thank you!

My husband and I had taken a trip to Jamaica with another couple back in the late 90’s and the men-folk decided they wanted to do a night dive. The other wife, who was long time good friend of mine, and myself decided we would pass on this little adventure and we stayed on the beach with a drink in hand.

Night diving was not part of the resort's offerings, but somehow they had found a local that was willing to take them out in his boat.

The boys loaded up and headed out on the dive boat and my friend and I sat on the beach to wait. We could see the dive boat, lit up in the dark, as it lay anchored out about 100 yards off shore.

Time went by and my friend and I sat and chatted and listened to distance music coming from the bar, but it was a pretty quiet night and we could occasionally hear ambient noises from the dive boat, including laughing and music.

The sky was black and it up with a million bright stars reflecting on the Caribbean water, and the lights from the dive boat flickered in the distance – when all of a sudden we heard screaming!

At first we were not sure where it was coming from, but then realized it was coming from the direction of the dive boat and it was men screaming!

We both jumped up and ran out to the end of the dock to get as close to the sound as we could, but we couldn’t make out what they were saying. Chills ran up our spines as we heard the men yelling, but had no idea what they were saying or what was wrong!

Eventually the panicked screaming stopped and all was quiet for a bit – then we heard our husbands yelling for us. We couldn't really tell what they were yelling, but we yelled back.

They needed help, but we weren’t sure what they needed. They no longer sounded panicked, but were definitely asking for us to send help. It sounded like they were wanting us to send out another boat.

My friend and I ran back to the resort and found some workers and told them that our husbands were out on a dive boat and needed help. Keep in mind that they were NOT supposed to be out there and that the boat that took them was not sanctioned by the resort!

The workers eventually got into a small boat and went out to see what was going on.  Soon our husbands were safe at shore and we got the entire story....

This is what had happened.
My husband and his buddy went on their night dive and everything went great, until they surfaced. They had little snap night lights attached to their dive gear that attracted stinging jelly-fish and so when they came to the surface they both got attacked, and that was the initial screaming we had heard, and they were yelling at each other to turn off the lights!

Once they both understood and got the lights detached, they were able to swim back to the boat.

When they got back to the dive boat, they realized the the boat crew had been partying and playing music, not paying attention, and the boat’s batteries had gone dead and so they were yelling for help to get someone to come out and get the boat running.

We laughed about it and were just happy they were safe. We got in the hot tub and relaxed a bit.

The men-folk, on their adventure, had ended up obtaining some local plant life and partook of it while we were in the hot tub.  Then came the munchies!!

Normally there was plenty of food available at the resort, but now it was after midnight and everything was closed up!

We hopped out of the pool in our bathing suites and went on a scavenger hunt of the resort looking for food.  We eventually found an open back door to one of the restaurants and peeked inside. There was one guy in there washing dishes, and so we snuck past him and ended up lifting an entire cheesecake from the walk in cooler!

The dishwasher heard us giggling as we exited, but made no attempt to stop us.

And THAT is the story of the Night Dive Nightmare.
